WASHINGTON STATE FAIR
Created for the Washington State Fair, this dramatic installation welcomes visitors at the main entrance with a sweeping semicircle of large, rectangular textured slabs. Various slabs incorporate stainless-steel weirs along their top plane creating a continuous sheet of flowing water that gives the installation the appearance of a massive wet wall.
Designed to make an immediate visual impact, the installation combines sculptural concrete, flowing water, and technology in a distinctive architectural feature. The wall also serves as a projection surface, allowing the fair to display video and films across its sweeping form-transforming the entrance into an ever-changing focal point for visitors.

Turnstone Design and Planning
For the Washington State Fair in Puyallup, Turnstone worked closely with the client and project engineer to develop the plans for this striking entrance feature. Turnstone designed the layout and details for the large vertical slabs creating the foundation for a series of sculptural panels with water flowing down their faces. This planning and design process allowed us to translate the client's vision into a practical, engineered feature that could be brought to life in concrete.

The Steel Skeleton Takes Shape
The prefabricated steel framework is now in place, with the reinforcing steel tightly positioned and carefully interlocked to form the structural skeleton of the large vertical slabs. Extensive scaffolding and bracing support the framework and provide access for the shotcrete installation.

Geometry in the Making
The massive slabs are beginning to take shape, and Turnstone is carefully fine tuning their geometric layout. Each slab must be precisely positioned in relation to the others to create the bold architectural pattern envisioned for the entrance feature. The attention to alignment and proportion is what turns a collection of massive concrete forms into a cohesive design.

Stainless Steel and Waterproofing
A custom fabricated stainless steel Weir is carefully installed into the top of the slab, precisely positioned to create the the feature's signature water flow. Turnstone handled the complete waterproofing of the system ensuring the stainless steel and concrete interface was properly sealed and built to withstand continuous exposure to water.

Behind the Flow
Beneath the feature a dedicated mechanical vault houses the pumps, valves, filters, and water treatment systems that work together to operate this complex installation. The entire system is designed to function automatically, efficiently managing water flow throughout more than 8 weirs. Behind the dramatic appearance of the feature is a carefully coordinated mechanical system that keeps everything running smoothly.

A Grand Entrance
The completed entrance feature brings together Turnstone's structural, artistic, and water feature expertise. Water gently cascades down the faces of the massive slabs, who's carefully arranged geometric forms are softened by a natural stone like surface. Stainless steel weirs add a crisp architectural element while the slabs also serve as projection surfaces for images and displays welcoming visitors to the Washington State Fair.
